Bulls fight to stay in Division 2

Having been drawn into the relegation battle after 8 straight losses, Bulls bounced back two weeks previously with a hard fought one point victory away at Glasgow Accies. With the visit of bottom place club, Whitecraigs, there was hope of further progress and the young Bulls team did not disappoint.

Bulls opened the match on the front foot, and recovered the ball from the kick off and after several accurate phases fed the ball wide where a wide pass just failed to go to hand, for what would have been the first try. Craigs were given an easy out with a penalty, but when possession was recovered quick hands fed Josh white whose charge to the line was halted just short. From the resulting penalty, bulls dominant lineout gave good possession eventually feeding the ball to Crumlish who crashed over. Conversion by Wilson. Bulls forwards were in full control at this point in the game, and after some great support lines forced the call deep into Whitecraigs’ 22. A great lineout maul sucked in the defenders, and the ball was quickly recycled through the hands to Deuchar to force his way over in the corner for a 12 – 0 lead. From the kick off Bulls went back on the attack after two great breaks from stand off Ryan, the attack stopped by a high tackle. Bulls opted for the scrum and drove the opposition back towards their own line. However scrappy possession led to the defence being awarded a penalty. The clearing kick did not reach touch and was fielded by Ryan and 2 passes later, flanker Alexander cut a great line to cross the whitewash.

20 minutes in, Whitecraigs had their best period of the first half and the Bulls’ defence was tested for the first time. They passed the test and cleared their lines to set up the bonus point try. Once again it was Alexander who was the beneficiary of some excellent handling and recycling. The ball was fed through the hands to the left wing where Alexander was lurking to dot down in the corner. Wilson added the extras from wide out. With minutes left on the clock and Craigs on the attack, Deuchar intercepted on the wing and set off with the whole pitch before him. He was hunted down and brought down on the opposition 22. AT the resultant melee Leggate was yellow carded by Ref Mary Pringle for a seat belt tackle. At this point in the report it is appropriate to compliment her on the standard of her officiating, many spectators commenting that she had put in the best performance seen at Laigh Bent this season. Half time Bulls 24 - Craigs 0

There was some expectation that we would see Bulls kick on in the second half, but a series of injuries and enforced changes seemed to disrupt the shape and game plan and they rather lost their way. The opening 10 minutes was a scrappy affair with neither team able to protect the ball until Wilson fielded a wayward kick on half way and chipped over the defence. The rub of the green went with him when the ball rebounded from a defender letting him kick on to gather at the line for Bulls’ 5th try which he failed to convert, the ball coming back off the upright. With the result almost assured Bulls seemed to switch off, and lose energy. Queen made a great break in midfield but the support was slow to arrive and the attack fizzled out. In fact it was Whitecraigs who scored next after some every scrappy play, the ball was fed to Bateman who forced his way in at the corner.
Bulls responded well and a pre-planned move off the scrum, saw a great line from full back Wilson to breech the defence. In stopping the attack, ‘Craigs conceded a penalty. Bulls opted for the scrum and White scored with a pick up and go from the base. Wilson added the extras. Once again, with the result almost secured, Bulls lost focus, walking to the set piece, giving ‘Craigs simple possession to let winger Pottie scamper in for their second. Bulls had the last word however when Queen, now playing on the wing received an accurate long pass out wide to dive over. Final score 41 – 10 to the Bulls moving them up to 8th in the table, but with more games played that the chasing pack. Every game counts from here to the end of the season.
