Bulls 13 - Dundee 17

Dundee High School FP made the hazardous journey south as storm Deirdre struck central Scotland. In arctic conditions both teams struggled to master the conditions as a gale howled across the pitch, blowing heavy rain and hail into the faces of the vociferous crowd. This vital bottom of the table clash, went the way of Dundee but not before Hamilton gave it their all to grab a late score to steal the win.
The early exchanges were error strewn as both teams struggled with the conditions. However in 10 Minutes, Dundee who have recruited well over the season, struck the first blow, after turning over Hamilton possession deep in the Hamilton half. From a 5 metre scrum they played the ball round the corner and after their pack drove on, prop Harry Meadows forced his way over for an unconverted try. 15 minutes later, Dundee again got good field position and their scrum, which was completely dominant at this stage of the game, drove forward. A series of pick and go plays sucked in the defence and when the ball was released to the back, centre Ross Aitken had an easy run in for a try converted by MacKay.
This Hamilton team does not lie down however and within two minutes they got on the score board with a try by Craig Inglis who profited from ground gained by breaks from McLaughlin and Plant. The ball was carried deep into the Dundee 22 and Inglis was on hand to force his way over. 2 minutes later Bulls struck again. Again it was a great line break, this time by captain Mark Wallace who came on a great inside line off Mcleish, made the break and fed Scott Whitelaw who outpaced the defence to run in from the half way line for a try on his 50th cap for the team. Both unconverted. Both defences were making big tackles , but Dundee flanker Andrew Hamilton found a great line close to the set piece and broke the first up tackle to scamper clear for the try, taking the half time score to 10 – 17.
The second half was almost all Hamilton, although a yellow card for prop Darren Carr 4 minutes in, could have been costly. However Hamilton stuck to their task and began to dominate territory. The numbers were levelled quickly with Dundee Prop Keith Slade joining Carr in the bin. Bulls through everything at Dundee and on 52 minutes McLeish knocked over a good penalty to reduce the leeway. The final quarter saw Hamilton camped on the Dundee line, but their staunch defence, and occasional failure to look after the ball, kept the Bulls out. Bulls were awarded several penalties and chose to run them, but could not find the gap. In the end they had to settle for a losing bonus point. It was a frustrated, waterlogged supporters group who trudged back the clubhouse after witnessing a loss which could have been so different.
