U18 Pre-season is a Biggar Challenge

The Under 18 team thought that their pre-season had faltered already when Dalziel cancelled their planned fixture on Saturday due to lack of numbers. Biggar who also found themselves in the same situation due to a cancellation by Currie, kindly agreed to bring a team through to Laigh Bent midweek so that both teams could get their season off to a start.
With a 7pm kickoff on what was one of the warmest nights in August, both teams benefited form what was a hotly contested match split into three twenty five minute periods for coaching purposes.
In an even first 15 minutes the game remained scoreless with both teams finding their feet in a fast and physical encounter. Biggar managed to eventually dot down a couple of scores before the first break, the second score being a well worked backs play, putting their 13 through the Hamilton defensive line to score near the posts.
In the second period Hamilton came right back into the game and started that period with a score early on. This forced Biggar to up their game scoring ten minutes later but Hamilton finished the period with a well worked try through the hands finishing it in the corner.
In the final period Biggar started the scoring with an early try but Hamilton's response to this was another team try to draw the score close. The pace and physicality of the Biggar team started to take its toll and as well as some excellent footwork there were a number of missed tackles that allowed Biggar to pull clear in the game by adding another three trys without response to win the game comfortably.
The young Hamilton team worked hard in their first venture of the season and there was a lot of positives came out the match. Notably our contact skills and scrums, also the fact that all Hamilton's scores were team trys where the team had the vision to exploit the overlap.

Saturday is another tough test away to Highland, but you find a lot more about your team when put under pressure, than you ever do by playing teams that are weaker than you.
