A look at how one of our former players is getting on since leaving the Bulls and settling back home overseas.

In each article, we ask the player to let us know their memories of Hamilton Rugby Club and what they are currently doing on and off the pitch...

This time we hear from Bart Karalus who played for the club in the 2007-08 season.

What are your highlights and memories of Hamilton Rugby Club?
I came part way through the season after the NZ season had finished, moving from Hamilton New Zealand to Hamilton Scotland. I joined a team that had a mix of old (Craig Sangster, Richard Maxton, and Big Davie Gemmell), young players (Craig Inglis, Ralph McInally, and the likes), locals, and foreigners!
I remember it being a tough season, where we struggled a bit with consistency but the effort was massive and we had a lot of fun on and off the field.
The highlight would have to be the bus trips with Selkirk away being a memorable game. I'm not sure of the end result but I do remember everyone getting up for that game in particular and the match being a real arm-wrestle of a contest.
A low light for me at least would be having to come off at halftime during one game because I was slurring my words and disorientated by the horizontal ice cold rain, I believe the condition is called hypothermia but the boys had other names for it (and me)!

A special thank you to Robbo (Ian Robinson) that introduced me to malt whisky in all its glory!

I really enjoyed my time at the Bulls, and am will always be grateful for the role it played in the five-year stint I had in Scotland, leading to the eventual meeting of my wife Stephanie.

What's going on at the moment on and off the field?
After the Bulls, I played two seasons at Glasgow Hawks followed by two seasons with Heusenstamm in Germany.
Eventually moving back to New Zealand in 2013 when I promised Stephanie I'd retire due to injuries, work, family, etc the usual.
I convinced her I needed one more season to retire happy, as my last game for my club Hamilton Marist was losing a semi-final to Fraser Tech, and I would also have the opportunity to play alongside one of my younger brothers Luke for the first time.
I managed two more seasons and have since hung up the boots and am now focusing on other things like our 4 children and work.
I am currently working as a companion animal vet at a clinic in Hamilton that I own together with another vet.

Thanks for the update Bart and remember that you always have a home at the Bulls.
