First games for young Bulls

Our new season brought the first competitive games to Leigh Bent this morning. The rain looked to threaten as the teams started to arrive, but soon gave way to sunshine as bright as their enthusiasm.

A very welcome addition to the team was Andrew, who despite having a legitimate reason to have the day off, came down to support his young players and show off his shiny new cast. Hamilton were first up against Dalziel and from the very start showed determination and blew the holiday cobwebs off. Some crunching tackles came in from Hamilton during the first couple of minutes and then we had the first of the new rules for this season come into play. The seasons first scrum. The three closest players to the breakdown formed up and the first uncontested scrum took place. Unfortunately the word uncontested had been disregarded by both teams and a shove was on with legs going trying to hook the ball out. It was during this we took our first injury of the day as one of the bulls knee’d his own player in the face. A coachable lesson gained from it and with the injury our new player, Adam, took to the pitch for his first game. Hamilton continued strongly and with another speedy player in the ranks and a much wider pitch were soon scoring tries. The game flowed evenly in the first half and come the break it was anyone’s game. A few injury niggles cropped up, but players retook the second half eager and showing the same level of commitment as they had in the first. Unfortunately the old problem cropped up again as the game wore on. With Dalziel able to repeatedly field fresher legs with rolling subs, the Bulls energy was slowly sapped. An exciting game came to an end and encouraging signs taken from the encounter.

After a rest the Bulls came on to face their second opponents of the day, Whitecraigs. Again they put their all into the game but a few injuries in quick succession saw players from Whitecraigs having to bolster the young Bulls ranks. Lack of subs saw Whitecraigs able to field fresher player keep the pressure on tired bodies. Hamilton played till the end and can hold their head high as they gave it their all and showed great skill and determination.

Thank you to both travelling teams and coaches, especially Chris from Whitecraigs, who stepped into the role of game coach and ended up doing more running than he had planned for the day. It’s amazing what some people will do to themselves to get out of running about! I’m sure that Stookie looked a bit home made…

Well done team on your performance today. Was a pleasure to watch you play and integrate your new player. Keep up the good work, you were all stars.
