U18s take eye off the ball against West
Fifteen minutes does not define a season
It is certainly worth watching the game video before reporting on the game.
For fifty five minutes Hamilton were by a long way the better team in the game. The score that West achieved just before the half time a result of a moment of not thinking before opening a mouth to the referee was against the run of play. This error allowed a quick tap for West. With every Hamilton player in an off side position and unable to legally tackle the West player, it is fair to say, that the score was a gift.
Prior to this, Hamilton had played with structure and control and from this structure had created several breaks, that were one pass away from a scoring break. The only thing that was missing from the first half performance was the three trys that Hamilton almost scored.
The second half started in a similar vein and with the backs having one of the best games of the season it seemed that it was only a matter of time before Hamilton were back in the game. Unfortunately with only fifteen minutes left on the clock Hamilton found themselves with a scrum on the Hamilton line and within the next two minutes there was a catalogue of mistakes that led to West regaining possession and scoring a try beneath the posts.
For the first time this season the heads went down in a squad who, had been punching above their weight all season. As a result the confidence with which this team plays with normally and have finished so many games on a high with, disappeared. More mistakes were made and with every mistake West grew in confidence scoring another two trys before the end of the game. The game finished 0-26 but that was no reflection of the story of the game.
As you can imagine, there was for the first time this season, an air of despondency in the post match huddle. The realisation that for a short time we had let ourselves drop below the high standards, that had become the hallmark of this squad.
The great thing about having fantastic footage of our games is that every player can now look back and see all the great play early in the game and know that this is what we are capable of. The players will realise that fifteen minutes does not define a season and we will be back next week fighting for or pride and club against Highland.
Thanks once again for all the touchline support and thanks to West for a great game.
