After a huge response and unprecedented coverage to our Huntington's Association campaign launch, the week concluded with the main event on the Friday evening. Coincidently, with the SRU’s Women in Rugby week launching about the same time, the star attraction of the night was Hamilton’s women’s team’s inaugural match.

Nicknamed by the women for the event, ‘The Heifers’, this team started as a group of half a dozen rugby mums who wanted a little bit of fun and exercise while their children were at training. It has now grown to over twenty women who are initially drawn buy the opportunity to try out touch rugby but return because of the enjoyment and camaraderie that rugby brings. When it was obvious that there was a demand for training, organisers Ali Anderson and Natalie Martin thought that it would be fun to provide a small exhibition match at the clubs intended charity night. When word got out that this was the intention then they were joined by even more women, not just from within the club.

The huge social media presence had the effect of drawing a large crowd and the game was not to disappoint. The game was played in a competitive spirit that gave everyone at the event a massive sense of enjoyment and community. As well as the night producing a fantastic total of over a £1000 for the charity the real legacy of this event was that the following week the decision was taken by the players to maintain the training and look at ways of attracting more players. It was also agreed that those that wanted to, could expand on the experience and as well playing touch rugby for some of the session, there would be a phased experiment of full contact rugby.

As a Club, Hamilton are delighted that a charitable venture has left a legacy of Women’s rugby at the club. With that decision made, there has already been growth with more new players attending this week’s training.
