Where are they now?

Hamilton Rugby club has welcomed the development of Ladies Rugby recently with the inaugural match played by The Hamilton Heifers. This first match was in aid of charity, raising £1000 for the Huntingdon’s Society which is a cause near to the club’s heart.
However in the mid nineties, the club had a ladies’ team playing in the national leagues. The team started at Hamilton Grammar school when a group of girls, led by Lindsay Smeaton, demanded that Jim Browning start a team with the same status as his boys’ teams (which included Richard Maxton!) and so it began, taking on a few local teams and eventually joining the women’s leagues playing teams like Hillhead, Stirling, Linlithgow and Kirkaldy. From that team emerged a Scotland Centre, Juliana Maxton (nee Murciano). Carey Easton, who ran 400 metres for Scotland and Britain played in the second row, but where are they now? We’d love to hear from any ladies who played for the school or the club back in the day. We’d love to know where they are and get in touch with them.

We do know that Carey and Leeann Dodds are playing in the current set up; Juliana coaches local rivals Dalziel; Alison Philips is in USA and her sister Linda teaches in Glasgow while Fiona Prentice is in Australia as is Amy Mitchell, but all the others??? Susan Gemmell is still around as are Jo-Ann Browning and Wendy Gibson.
If you know where they are, or indeed if you read this and recognise yourself, please get in touch through our facebook pageor by emailing Jim Browning – jim@jbrowning.co.uk.

The photos show the first ladies’ team lining up before a match. But there were more. In total over 40 girls played rugby for the school /club. Jim’s memory has failed him when it comes to identifying them all. Can you help?
Hamilton Ladies are having a night on the 2nd of December at the club and would welcome former players to come along.
