A look at how one of our former players is getting on since leaving the Bulls and settling away from Hamilton.

In each article, we ask the player to let us know their memories of Hamilton Rugby Club and what they are currently doing on and off the pitch...

This time we hear from Vinny Davidson who came to Hamilton along with Alan Dodds when he was studying in Glasgow from 2001-2005

What are your highlights and memories of Hamilton Rugby Club?
I joined at a very successful time for the club and was lucky to be involved with both 1st and 2nd squads that won League titles.

I think my favourite win was the last game of the season away to Annan in the undefeated season with the Super 2s. Coming from Dumfries I had a healthy dislike of Annan RFC growing up so it was great to win there and finish the season as unbeaten champions.

It was a really tight game and I scored the final try that day running in from the 22 (seriously).
Shanzy was going mental on the touchline as I butchered a four-man overlap but that doesn’t matter.

I have lots of fantastic memories at the club and although the rugby was great, some of the best have nothing to do with actually playing. So many to choose from but some highlights that stick in my mind are:

  • Piggsy getting 'in trouble' during cider club (he may or may not remember).
  • The charity shop fancy dress day out watching Cartha QP.
  • Seve’s stag do in Riga.
  • Tweag and Pete Murphy teaching me how (or how not) to drink gin at a Burns supper
  • Travelling back from Aberdeen on the back seat with the rest of the front row - taps off and freezing after the driver reversed into a tree and the back window got smashed and was then removed.

What's going on at the moment on and off the field?
After I graduated, I moved to London and started playing in West London for Grasshoppers RFC with ex-Hamilton Captain Stuart Eynon’s brother.
I played there for five seasons (briefly with another ex-Hamilton lad Craig Murray) before, after 7 years in London, I decided to move abroad and I went to Qatar and played with Doha RFC.

I had a fantastic time in Doha and got to play in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Kuwait, Bahrain and Oman winning the West Asia Championship and the Gulf top 6.

I moved back to London in 2016 and retired from playing rugby in any serious way. I recently turned 35 years old and am really trying to avoid Veterans rugby as hard as I can!

Thanks for the update Vinny and remember that you always have a home at the Bulls.
