A look at how one of our former players is getting on since leaving the Bulls and settling back home overseas.

In each article, we ask the player to let us know their memories of Hamilton Rugby Club and what they are currently doing on and off the pitch...

This time we hear from Sergio Fernandez Renau who joined the club as a novice player but added much value to the Club and ended up making an important contribution off the bench for the 2s in a promotion season.

What are your highlights and memories of Hamilton Rugby Club?
I arrived in Hamilton in September 2014 without knowing anyone. I was put in the same flat as a pleasant, little Portuguese man named John Rogerson. After chatting for a while he told me that he played for the local rugby team and he recommended that I go and try it and after, if I liked it, I could join the team.

I didn’t just like it, I fell in love with the team and the club from the very first moment. The environment was amazing and the rugby lads were really friendly despite their strong Scottish accent that sometimes made me feel a bit embarrassed because I couldn’t catch a single word.
I knew that my level of rugby was that of a novice but I tried my best and learned a lot, more than I had ever dreamt. There was no point in comparing it with the rugby I had played before in Spain.
Unfortunately, we don’t have the same rugby tradition as Scotland, we have some good teams in the north but the level is not the same. I played for the 3rd team and was also called up to the second team for a couple of games. Both teams had fantastic players and in regards to the first team, I have nothing bad to say about their outstanding skill level and commitment.
The training sessions were super, every day there was a new exercise practicing the things we did wrong in the last game, I felt as if I was in a professional team preparing for the world cup.
The smell of the wet grass, the mud on the boots (sometimes all over your clothes), the rain soaking us, occasionally even small hail stones, and the windy days that made even a two-meter pass impossible. All of this seems to be the worst aspects of the sport but, in fact, it is what gives rugby its special character and these are some of the things that I miss from rugby and also from Scotland.
I loved the entire experience but I have some awesome memories such as the Mull’s 7’s tournament, which the Bulls won. I went as a supporter and the entire trip was an adventure. Also, the bus trips were some of the funniest moments of my time in Scotland, I wish I could remember all the songs the lads sang.

What's going on at the moment on and off the field?
As I said before, we don’t have a good level rugby where I live so I am not playing anymore because I am focused on my job, but who knows where I will be working in the future, I haven’t given up rugby yet.
I would like to take the opportunity to thank everyone that made the club feel like a family, from the players and coaches to the physios, sponsors, and supporters. All of whom play an essential role in the running of the club. Keep working hard because you are what make Hamilton Rugby Club great. As you say, once a Bull always a Bull.
