A look at how one of our former players is getting on since leaving the Bulls and setting up home overseas.

This is the final piece in the Bulls Abroad series of articles on former players who have moved away and we hope that you have enjoyed reading of their triumphs (or otherwise).

In each article, we ask the player to let us know their memories of Hamilton Rugby Club and what they are currently doing on and off the pitch...

This time we hear from Kenny Rice who left the club in 2013.

What are your highlights and memories of Hamilton Rugby Club?
I started playing for Hamilton RFC in 2000-10 S1 and 2nd grade and 2011-13 during this time I played 2nds rugby and only ever had 2 games for Hamilton 1st team.
During my time playing for Hamilton, I have lots of great memories from playing S1 level up to my two 1st team games. Thinking back to my time playing a lot of it seems like a blur probably due to all the concussions I have had ☺. I would say the best times I had playing for Hamilton were my two last years 2011-13 there was a great atmosphere with the club, players and the supporters.

I think my 2011 highlight would be playing 2nd grade vs Kilmarnock. I caught the ball from a kick-off and burst through the line and made a massive run - as I always did (haha). I ended up getting tackled but got back up to support for the 2nd phase ruck where I found myself in the scrum half position. I passed it out to Craig Mclean who was unmarked on the wing and he dotted down in the corner.

My 2013 highlight would be playing 2nd grade against Dalziel RFC at home. I loved nothing more than beating them. I found myself at the back of a ruck just inside DL’s 10, I picked the ball up with clear space in front of me and had a run and I flattened the standoff with only had the full back to beat. The full-back tried to tackle me but he got bumped off and I scored my first try since playing Under 16 it was a great feeling and the rest of the lads loved it.

Also, in 2013 before I left and moved to New Zealand I played some rugby with the 3rds and to help them got the whole year undefeated. t was a really great feeling the lads played some great footy.

What's going on at the moment on and off the field?
I’m currently living and working in Christchurch, New Zealand and working as a corrections officer for the New Zealand department of corrections at Christchurch Men's Prison.
I still find time to play rugby and currently turn out for New Brighton RFC where I play 2nd-grade rugby. We have been finalists in our championship in 2013, 14,15 and championship winners 2016 and the passion for the game still shines brightly.

From me KIA KAHA (be strong) and I will hopefully see you all again soon

Thanks for the update Kenny and remember that you always have a home at the Bulls.
