August saw the introduction of Hamilton Rugby Club’s youth academy structure. The process for selection was undertaken during the month of July and was hotly contested for by a number of players from this year’s U15, U16 and U17 squads. The selection settled on11 athletes from the 19 involved in the selection process.

The athletes have just finished the 2nd week of our academy where each athlete is expected to participate in 3 academy sessions a week along with the regular team training and team games.  At this early stage all are working extremely hard in the programme and are keen to develop the skills needed to be an elite athlete within rugby.

Those athletes that were not successful within the first selection process will be closely monitored over the season and will have the opportunity to train within the academy in specific sessions to work on the feedback generated through the process. It is hoped that through this process we will create elite athletes and drive on our squad players to become better athletes and push for one of these privileged position.

The Academy will also be used as a continuation of our coach education programme where coaches are invited to attend sessions to improve knowledge and see new and old techniques put into practice. The Academy athletes have all agreed to help with the education of our club players by passing on any new knowledge obtained throughout the process.
